Rethinking warehouse performance in the age of automation 

Warehouse automation accelerates, racking loads rise, and performance expectations become more demanding. All of this pushes traditional slab solutions to their limits. In this context, a recent project in the United States required upgrading an existing warehouse to handle significantly higher racking loads. The key requirements were to:

  • Maintain the existing slab thickness
  • Support higher and more concentrated loads
  • Complete construction efficiently within a long, narrow placement area

To meet these requirements, the team selected an innovative hybrid solution: SigmaSlab®.

Where proven technologies come together

SigmaSlab® combines two proven reinforcement technologies in a single system:

  • Dramix® steel fibers
  • CCL post-tensioning

While each technology performs strongly on its own, their combination unlocks a new level of structural efficiency, meeting higher performance demands while optimizing material use.

Unlocking efficiency in complex construction environments

Warehouse floors with narrow aisles typically present logistical challenges during construction. In this project, SigmaSlab® enabled a more efficient execution approach:

  • Internal screeding within the placement area
  • Flexible placement widths of up to 60 feet (approx. 18,3 m)
  • Faster, more efficient concrete placement

In addition, the post-tensioning system enabled panel lengths of up to 180 feet (approx. 54,9 m), helping to counter higher racking forces while improving long-term floor performance.

 

Solutions like SigmaSlab® are becoming increasingly relevant as the industry faces higher performance expectations, rising automation, and greater pressure to optimize resources.


Less labor, faster delivery, stronger performance

By replacing traditional rebar with post-tensioning cables and steel fiber reinforcement, SigmaSlab® offers several practical benefits:

  • Reduces labor-intensive rebar tying
  • Speeds up installation
  • Eliminates the need for saw-cut joints

The result is not only faster construction, but also a cleaner and more efficient on-site workflow.

Building sustainability through material efficiency

Sustainability is no longer optional, it is a growing requirement in industrial construction. SigmaSlab® directly addresses this by improving material efficiency while maintaining performance. In this project, slab thickness was reduced from 8 inches (approx. 20,3 cm) to 6 inches (approx. 15,2 cm), leading to:

  • Immediate concrete savings
  • Lower material consumption
  • Reduced carbon footprint

This demonstrates how smarter engineering can support both performance and environmental goals.

This project marks the first SigmaSlab® installation in the United States, reflecting a broader shift in the industry.
