What we do

Meeting the high traffic and heavy loads bearing requirements

Canuck Express is a transportation company based in Toronto with operations throughout Ontario and Quebec. The company fleet includes a range of cargo vehicles from 3-ton trucks to tri-axle truck-and-trailers equipped with refrigerated units. These are available 24/7 for emergencies and scheduled deliveries to grocery chains, manufacturers, and distributors.

The floor of their 40,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center in Markham was built with Dramix® steel fiber reinforced concrete.

.

The challenge

The facility’s original floor designs did not meet the load requirements to support Canuck Express’ warehouse and distribution center operations. The specification had to be changed and optimized to withstand high traffic and heavy loads.

Canuck Express, Ontario, CA - Project

The solution

Initially, a standard specification based on Dramix® 3D steel fiber reinforcement was suggested to the building owner and general contractor. This solution was designed to eliminate rebar reinforcement, decrease concrete use, and reduce costs.

The Dramix® 3D specification was changed after it was found Canuck Express would be occupying the building upon completion. To ensure the floor could withstand heavy truck and forklift use, Dramix® 3D was replaced by 25 kg/m³ of Dramix® 4D 65/60 BG steel fibers.

The seven-inch concrete floor was completed on-time and met the high load-bearing requirements of the daily operation. The use of high-performance Dramix® 4D fibers prevented construction delays since the site grading did not have to be changed.
