The T-48 tunnel is part of the Udhampur–Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a strategic project connecting Kashmir with India’s rail network. With a 20 km length and 8.5 km of DRAMIX® steel f iber lining, it is among India’s most advanced tunnel builds, designed for a 100-year service life.
USBRL faces extreme Himalayan conditions—complex geology, high tectonic stresses, fault zones, and heavy water inflows. For T-48, excavation stability was critical with inflows sometimes exceeding 100 L/ min and sudden bursts up to 400 L/s. Remote terrain, logistics, and long construction timelines added to the difficulty.
Tunnel T-48 used a hybrid approach with shotcrete and steel ribs, followed by cast-in-place concrete lining reinforced with steel fibers. The 0.40 m C30/37 lining used DRAMIX® 3D 65/60 BG at 45 kg/ m³ over 8.5 km of the 20 km tunnel. Steel fibers provided crack control, ductility, and durability while reducing dense rebar and speeding formwork cycles. As India’s first CIP lining designed with fibers under f ib CEB-FIP 2010 (class 4c), it set a benchmark for SFRC in tunnels. Importantly, local manufacture of DRAMIX® steel fibers in India ensured uninterrupted supply and quality, helping meet tight schedules despite the remote Himalayan setting.
