Part of the USBRL megaproject, T-49A is a 5.1 km railway tunnel built by NATM through some of the Himalayas’ toughest geology. With 1.2 km of cast-in-place lining reinforced by Dramix® steel fibers, the tunnel was designed for a 100-year life and built to withstand severe conditions.
The T-49A alignment passed through shear zones, perched aquifers, squeezing rock mass, and highly jointed strata. Heavy groundwater ingress threatened excavation stability. Remote Himalayan terrain made supply chains and construction logistics equally demanding, pushing the need for robust, reliable solutions.
Using NATM, T-49A combined f lexible excavation with a durable CIP lining reinforced by Dramix® steel fibers. The 0.40 m C30/37 lining used Dramix® 3D 65/60 BG at 45 kg/m³, strengthening 1.2 km of the tunnel. Fibers enhanced crack control, ductility, and durability, reducing dense rebar and improving placement in complex ground. Designed to meet class C30/37-4c, the solution balanced strength with constructability. Local manufacture of Dramix® in India secured uninterrupted supply and consistent quality, ensuring progress despite geological and logistical hurdles in one of USBRL’s most challenging packages.
