Congebec is a supplier of multi-temperature storage facilities and distribution services supporting the food, retail and consumer packaged goods industries. The company operates 12 modern facilities throughout Canada. Bekaert provided a highly flexible steel fiber concrete reinforcement solution for its Etobicoke, Toronto storage facility.
As one of the two company locations in the Toronto area, the Etobicoke facility was designed to serve companies operating in the frozen and dry food industries. No fewer than 25 different loading specifications were identified throughout this 125,000 square foot facility.
This meant that a standard floor reinforcement solution was not possible and different solutions had to be put in place to cope with this unusually wide range of demands.
The Bekaert team worked closely with the engineer of record and the general contractor to come up with the required 25 different floor reinforcement solutions using Dramix® 4D 65/60 BG. Slab thickness mostly varied between 7 and 10 inches.
This approach reduced the project cost significantly. A standard floor reinforcement would have had to take the most critical loading case into account – requiring 12 inches of concrete – and repeat it throughout the facility. This would have been both unnecessary and expensive.
