Package 04 is part of the 125 km Rishikesh Karanprayag rail corridor, designed to improve connectivity in Uttarakhand and support the Char Dham network. The section includes twin-bore tunnels of around 10.5 km, where Dramix® steel fiber reinforced linings enhance durability and speed of construction.
The tunnels pass through highly complex Himalayan geology with squeezed ground, weak fault zones, and heavily jointed rock strata. High water ingress, tectonic stresses, and remote terrain made excavation and lining stability extremely demanding. Logistics and schedules were equally critical, given the scale and location.
In Package 04, tunnel linings were designed using Dramix® 4D 80/60 BGP steel fibers to meet structural and durability requirements under extreme Himalayan conditions. The final lining, 450 mm thick C50/60 concrete with 30 kg/ m³ fiber dosage, offered three dimensional reinforcement, superior crack control, and post-cracking toughness. This minimized the need for dense rebar cages, improved placement, and accelerated construction cycles. The approach enhanced durability against high water pressures and deformations, while also reducing CO2 and steel consumption. Local manufacture of Dramix® in India ensured uninterrupted supply, helping maintain schedules in this remote and challenging project environment.
