The South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) is a 20 ft diameter, 21,800 ft-long bored tunnel that was excavated in shale, siltstone and basalt through several fault zones with high groundwater pressures up to 9.6 bars. For the first time in North America, Dramix®4D 80/60BG fibers were designed as the optimal reinforcement for the precast segments.
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in the U.S. It is also a major transport route for both the Bay Area and the state of California. Originally, traffic from the east side of the city accessed the bridge via Doyle Drive, a highway that included a section of viaduct. To ensure seismic stability, the roadway has been replaced with a new parkway.
The first phase of New York’s long-awaited Second Avenue Subway opened in 2017. Nearly 2 miles (3km) long, the project required staging heavy civil construction in one of the world’s biggest and busiest cities. Along with the new twin track tunnels, Phase 1 included the construction of three new stations that are among the largest underground excavations in North America.
Serving the Washington, D.C., region, Dulles International Airport has seen strong growth in passenger numbers – serving more than 25 million per year. In preparation for reaching a 55 million passenger target, the authority launched a mega renovation and expansion program to improve the airport’s facilities including transport, taxiways and a new terminal.
The deep rock Pawtucket Tunnel project will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) and protect New England’s largest estuary, Narragansett Bay. This 30ft- (9m-) inside diameter tunnel is more than 2 miles (3.5km) long, mined by TBM through sandstone at depths of 140-180ft (42-54m). It’s the third and final phase for the client’s CSO Abatement Program.
Connecting Washington, D.C.’s, international airport to the region’s public transit network required a 23 mile (37km) rail extension. Construction in this busy metropolitan area meant interfacing with local highway and other infrastructure along the route, adding layers of complexity in designing the at-grade and elevated alignment. Tunneling provided a cost-effective solution.
A once-in-a-generation investment in Montréal’s public transit, the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) is a new 42mi (67km), fully automated light rail network with 26 stations. A significant component of the infrastructure works for the REM system is a major renovation of the historic Mont Royal Tunnel, including extensive underground construction for the new Édouard-Montpetit station (EMP).
Teamwork between partners with enough in-house expertise and knowledge to solve the specific challenges of a mine is one of the key success factors of mining projects. In a lead, zinc and copper mine located in Huallanca, Peru, a glaring issue was spotted by Prodimin, a mining specialist. They strongly advised to replace the reinforcement with a high quality, steel fiber reinforcement solution, such as Dramix®.
The Sahar Road Crossover Cavern (SRCC) is a tunnel with 6 symmetrical cross sections on Mumbai’s Metro Line 3. The SRCC’s original design called for a conventionally reinforced, cast-in-situ secondary lining. However, due to its complexity, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation explored the use of sprayed waterproofing membranes (PSCL) and a drained regulating layer.
The new Silvertown Tunnel under the River Thames will reduce pollution in East London while easing traffic congestion in a vital corridor. With an interior diameter of 10.66m, it’s the UK’s largest tunnel to date, designed to accommodate London’s iconic double-decker buses in each lane. The 1.4km tunnel opens up new routes for public transit to quickly cross the river and access new destinations.
The Dubai Expolink Route 2020 is a 15 km (9.3 mi) extension of the Dubai Red metro line. The extended line connects the city with the Dubai Expo 2020. The route was designed to cover populated areas in the city and to make commuting easier for visitors and residents, both during the six-month world fair and in the future.
Abu Dhabi’s Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Programme (STEP) is a deep gravity wastewater sewer system. The size and scale of this megaproject was groundbreaking for the region, deploying seven TBMs at depths down to 80m. The robust tunnel system has provided a sustainable solution that reduces the agency’s operating budget and carbon footprint, as well as improving the local environment.
A new 40km-long road in Colombia will pass through the mountains of western Antioquia, drastically cutting journey times and improving freight transportation across the region. Seven tunnel excavations will eventually connect the road through this difficult stretch, including the 9.74km Túnel del Toyo, currently the longest road tunnel in the Americas.
The Riva tunnel is a 562 m (1844 ft) long four-lane motorway tunnel located northeast of Istanbul, Turkey. The tunnel’s excavation span is 22 m (72 ft), while the final lining diameter is 18 m (59 ft). This makes it one of Europe’s biggest tunnel cross sections. The tunnel, consisting of two twin tubes, is part of the North Marmara Motorway, which connects Asia and Europe. The new motorway is expected to cut chronic congestion in Istanbul and contribute to new and developing industrial investments in the Marmara Region.
The 6.9 km (4.3 mi) long Lee Tunnel in East London connects the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works and the Abbey Mills Pumping Station. The three main elements of this sewer tunnel project – the precast segmental lining, permanent lining to the shafts and the secondary lining to the main tunnel – are all reinforced with Dramix® steel fibers.
Let’s talk about your project and discover what Dramix® fibers can do for your project.
